- The Common Toads are large species of toads found in Europe.
- Except for Iceland and some areas of the Mediterranean, they are found in water extending to Siberia and North Africa.
- They inhabit woodlands, forests, marshes and meadows that are close to water.
- They are most active in wet weather which are nocturnal, resting by the day and hunting at night.
- Their skin is rough looking and is permeable as with other toads.
- They are generally brown in color, but may also be found to be black, green or yellow.
- They are carnivores primarily feeding on insects and occasionally on worms and spiders.
- They catch their prey, in air, with the help of their long-sticky tongue.
- Their natural predators are grass snakes, hedgehogs, foxes, cats and birds of prey.
- They lay their eggs in water in long strings called toadspawn.
- The eggs hatch in water releasing the common toad tadpoles which metamorphose into common toads.
