  1. Desert Tortoise is a medium sized species of tortoise.
  2. They are found in the sandy plains and rocky foothills surrounding the Mojave and Sonoran deserts.
  3. Their body has adaptations that help them survive in the arid desert conditions.
  4. Their front legs are flat and heavy with claw like scales, making them effective diggers.
  5. The desert tortoise is well known for the burrows it digs to stay cool, when it gets too hot.
  6. Distinctively, they are small sized and their shells are highly patterned.
  7. On an average they grow to be around 25cm -36cm in length.
  8. They are herbivores feeding on grass, herbs and wild flowers.
  9. Their natural predators include the Gila monster, coyotes, feral cats, reptiles and birds of prey.
  10. They are known to breed twice a year during spring and autumn.
  11. The female desert tortoise lays 6-7 eggs per clutch which hatch within 2 months.
  12. The Desert Tortoise is threatened from extinction today.
