  1. Highland Cattle are an old breed of cow, native to Scotland.
  2. They are also known as the Hairy Cow.
  3. They were initially bred for beef but are now also bred to participate in cattle shows.
  4. Distinctively, they have long-haired coats which help them survive in the harsh climatic conditions.
  5. They inhabit the areas which are close to the Arctic circle, thereby enduring uncompromising conditions.
  6. To adapt to these conditions, they have a large, strongly built body with double layer of thick hair.
  7. They have two horns on their head which they use to defend themselves and to dig out vegetation.
  8. They are farmed in Europe, North America and Australia for their meat and occasionally for their long hair.
  9. They are known to be skilled, patient and extremely adept at finding and foraging for food.
  10. It is not uncommon to find them grazing on steep slopes of the Scottish Highlands.
  11. They are herbivores feeding on grass, leaves, shrubs, low lying trees and flowers.
  12. Their natural predators are very few and include humans, wolves, mountain lions, bears, cougars and occasionally coyotes.
