  1. Saint Bernards are large dogs that belong to the family of mastiffs.
  2. They are believed to have their origin in Switzerland.
  3. They grow to an average size of 102cm and weigh around 91kg.
  4. On an average, they live to be around 10 years old.
  5. They are known to have a friendly and gentle nature.
  6. Interestingly, they appear very similar to the English Mastiff and were used to redevelop them after the World War II.
  7. They are loyal and are known to be really eager to please their owners.
  8. They are also quite fond of children and are generally good with them.
  9. That said, they need to be trained from an early age by a firm and experienced trainer.
  10. They also need to be socialized with other people and animals from a very early age.
  11. Failing this, they tend to become very controlling and can be difficult for even strong people to control.
  12. They bark at strangers, which along with their size can deter intruders, though that doesn’t make them as good as other guard dogs.
