  1. Mandrills are medium-large sized primates found in western and central African tropical jungles.
  2. They are best known for their red and blue colored nose and their rump that is multi-colored.
  3. The nose of the female mandrill is duller than that of a male and a female is only half the size of a male mandrill.
  4. Though they are closely related to baboons, they are not a part of the great apes.
  5. They mandrills inhabiting the north and south of Ogooue river comprise different subspecies.
  6. The male mandrills bare their extremely long teeth to intimidate their predators.
  7. They are sociable animals living in troops, led by a dominant male and comprising of female mandrills and their young.
  8. The male mandrills that do not lead troops lead a solitary life.
  9. The alpha male leading the troop mates with the females of the troop and also protects them.
  10. They are omnivores, feeding on fruits, seeds, nuts, berries, insects, roots, leaves, small mammals and reptiles.
  11. Their natural predators are leopards, large snakes, birds of prey and humans.
  12. Due to over-hunting and habitat loss, mandrills are vulnerable from extinction.
