- The Axolotl are medium sized amphibians found in a lake-complex in south-central Mexico.
- They are closely related to Tiger Salamanders, and continue to retain their tadpole -like appearance.
- They have flat, broad head much wider than their bodies.
- They have feathery gills on either sides of their head allowing them to breath under water.
- They are also able to regenerate their detached or damaged limbs.
- They may be pink, white, brown, black or grey in color.
- They are carnivores feeding on worms, insect larvae, molluscs and small fish.
- They have very few natural predators in birds and large fish.
- Their average lifespan is around 15 to 25 years.
- The female Axolotl lays 100-1000 eggs which hatch after a month’s time.
- The baby axolotls emerge directly into the open water.
- Axolotls are very popular as freshwater aquarium pets.
- Increase in pollution is their biggest threat today.
