  1. Somali cats are long haired Abyssinian cats that have their origin in north Africa.
  2. However, they are now mainly found and bred in The United States of America.
  3. They are thought to appeared from an Abyssinian breeding program.
  4. A lot of bottle-brush tailed kittens were born with long, fluffy coats.
  5. Interestingly, unlike other long haired cats, they shed very less hair.
  6. They are active. Intelligent, playful and curious by nature.
  7. Though the look like Abyssinian cats, they differ from them in their fur length and the consequently required grooming.
  8. They respond very well to human companionship and the company of other animals.
  9. All this makes them an excellent choice as household pets.
  10. They look elegant and are known to have a bouncy nature.
  11. Unfortunately, they are prone to teeth problems.
  12. Around 5% of all Somali cats are known to have the defective kidney gene which they have inherited from the Abyssinian cats.
  13. On an average the Somali cats live to be around 19 years old.
