  1. Unlike the name suggests, the Australian Shepherd have their origin in North America.
  2. They are a breed of herd dogs.
  3. With an average size of 58cm, they weigh around 70lbs.
  4. They may be tan, black, brown, red or grey in color.
  5. On an average, they live to be around 14 years old.
  6. A female Australian Shepherd gives birth to around 7 puppies per litter.
  7. They are energetic dogs requiring a lot of exercise and mental stimulation.
  8. They are confident, independent, loving and responsive.
  9. They are very protective of the owner’s family around strangers.
  10. They need to be trained from a very early age.
  11. Early socializing brings out the best in them.
  12. Interestingly, they do extremely well in Frisbee catching and retrieving items from water.
  13. They are wonderful family dogs who are very affectionate towards humans and other pets.
