- Indian Palm Squirrels are a species of squirrels found in India and Sri Lanka.
- They have been accidentally introduced in Western Australia and the population of Indian squirrels is thriving there.
- They are also known as the 3 stripe squirrel as they have a mix of white and dark stripes on their back.
- They also have distinctively long front teeth.
- They inhabit and build their nests on exotic tree tops.
- The female Indian Palm squirrel gives birth to around 2-3 young in these nests.
- The baby Indian palm squirrels are weaned after around 10 weeks.
- They are very often seen as pests as they tend to eat and damage crops.
- They are omnivores feeding on fruits, eggs, insects, small mammals and birds.
- Their natural predators are most of the meat eating mammals, snakes, wildcats and humans.
- Interestingly, the Indian palm squirrel does not hibernate in winters.
- Though they get out of their nests only during the warm, sunny afternoons.
