  1. Howler Monkeys are one of the largest monkeys found in South America.
  2. They get their name from their loud calls which are the loudest amongst all the primates.
  3. Their calls are said to be heard over a few miles away.
  4. There are around 9 species of howler monkeys in the world.
  5. They inhabit the South American tropical jungles.
  6. They are one of the largest species of monkeys growing to be around 1m long.
  7. Though they are quite large in size, they are quite light and weigh only around 10kg.
  8. Their low weight helps them move through the trees with increased agility and hang from the branches to pick fruits.
  9. Interestingly, they spend 80% of their time resting and are one of the least active species of monkeys.
  10. They are omnivores, mainly feeding on fruits, nuts and seeds and occasionally insects.
  11. Their natural predators are Jaguars, Snakes and Birds.
  12. They live in troops, comprising around 18 members.
  13. They have an average lifespan of around 15-20 years.
