  1. Common Loons are a species of aquatic birds.
  2. They are found in freshwater lakes in Canada, Alaska, Greenland, Iceland and Scotland
  3. They are closely related to ducks especially because of their ability to dive underwater to hunt for food.
  4. They are capable of flying hundreds of kilometers while migrating.
  5. However, they need a long distance to gain momentum for take-off.
  6. Their rear positioning of the legs makes their landing clumsy and is not best suited for walking.
  7. Therefore, they skim along their bellies in water too slow down, while landing in water.
  8. They swim gracefully on the surface and are excellent divers known to dive around 200ft to catch their prey.
  9. The common loons mainly feed on fish.
  10. The common loons with a freshwater diet prey on pike, perch, sunfish, trout and bass.
  11. Their salt water diet comprises rock fish, flounder, sea trout and herring.
  12. Their natural predators are Humans eagles and Osprey.
  13. Distinctively, they have a yodel-like call which sound quite eerie.
  14. Due to pollution and resultant acid rains, they have disappeared from the eastern North American waters.
