  1. The Armadillo is native to North and South America.
  2. There are around 20 species of Armadillo, only one of which is found in the USA.
  3. The average length is around 75cm, with the Giant Armadillo growing up to 1.5m.
  4. The smallest species of Armadillo is the Pink Fairy Armadillo (around 10cm in length).
  5. They have a hard outer shell and can curl up into a ball.
  6. Their shell is made up of plates of bone, with scales, covered in horn.
  7. They have long claws used for digging burrows and for hunting insects.
  8. They mainly feed on insects and sometimes on worms, spiders, snakes and frogs.
  9. Armadillos are quite fast reaching a top speed of up to 30mph.
  10. Their poor vision makes them quite vulnerable in their jungle environment.
  11. Their primary predators are bears, wolves, wildcats and cougars.
  12. The Female Armadillo gives birth to four young ones after 3 to 4-month gestation.
  13. The newborn remains in burrows with their mother for a few months feeding on mother’s milk.
  14. They have an average lifespan of 4 to 12 years.
