  1. Yaks are animals belonging to the same family as the American Bison, Asian water Buffalo and the African Buffalo.
  2. They are found in the Central Asian mountainous regions.
  3. They are herd animals gathering in herds ranging from 10 to 100 Yaks.
  4. Yaks are still domesticated and used for carrying heavy load through mountain passes and for pulling heavy machinery.
  5. The male yaks are bigger than the females, and generally grow to 2m in height.
  6. They appear quite similar to the Bison with long hair covering them to keep them warm and dry.
  7. They have firm, dense horns that are used to break through the snow to get to the plants underneath and also for defense.
  8. They have a complex digestive system like other cow species for digestion and maximum nutrient absorption.
  9. Yaks are herbivores grazing on grass, herbs and wild flowers.
  10. They have their predators in Humans, Bears and wolves.
  11. On an average they live to be around 15-20 years.
  12. Yaks breed in the month of September and the female Yaks give birth to a single calf after a 9-month gestation.
  13. The baby Yaks are completely independent at the age of one and are fully grown by 7-8 years.
  14. Only a few yaks can be found in the wild, though they have a thriving domestic population.
