  1. The Bengal Tiger is more popularly known as the Royal Bengal Tiger.
  2. They are a sub species of tigers found in the dense forests and Jungles of the Indian subcontinent.
  3. They are thought to be the second largest species of tigers.
  4. They may grow up to 3.3m in length and weigh up to 660lbs
  5. They have yellow or light orange coats with black or dark brown stripes.
  6. The White Tiger is a Bengal tiger with white coat and black stripes.
  7. Another rare tiger is the black tiger, known to have a black coat and lighter stripes.
  8. Bengal tigers are dominant carnivorous predators mainly hunting larger mammals.
  9. They stalk the prey (with top speed reaching 96kmph) till they catch it off guard
  10. They don’t have natural predators because of their size and power.
  11. The female Bengal tiger gives birth to around 5 cubs after a 3-4-month gestation.
  12. The cubs are blind when born and are cared for by their mother till 18 months.
  13. Habitat loss due to deforestation and human hunters are their main threat today.
  14. Although called the most numerous species, there are only around 2000 Bengal tigers left.
