  1. Gophers are small squirrel-like rodents found in North America.
  2. They grow to an average size of 12-30cm and weigh around 200-1000g.
  3. There are 2 species- The Pocket Gopher and The Richardsons Ground Squirrel.
  4. They are best known for their extensive tunnels and subterranean chambers, also known as gopher towns.
  5. The Gopher towns stretch over a large area and accommodate thousands of gophers.
  6. The adult gophers position themselves at the front of the gopher towns and whistle to the other gophers at the sight of potential danger.
  7. They are known to collect and store large amounts of food by hoarding.
  8. A gopher mound, which is actually dirt being pushed behind, is created while digging the tunnel.
  9. The Richardsons Ground Squirrel are known to hibernate from the middle of summer till spring.
  10. The males are known to come out of hibernation before the females to establish their territories.
  11. They are omnivores feeding on nuts, seeds, berries, grass, grains and insects.
  12. Their natural predators are large birds, badgers and coyotes.
  13. Due to their extensive tunnels, gophers often cause major disruption to agriculture and landscapes.
  14. Humans are known to kill gophers as they consider them to be agricultural pests
