  1. King Penguins are the second largest species of Penguin, found in the sun Antarctic region.
  2. They grow to an average height of 60cm -90cm.
  3. There are two sub species of the king penguin which are distinguished by their geographical location.
  4. One of the sub species breed in the northern part and Falkland Islands and the other subspecies breeds in the temperate regions.
  5. They inhabit the rocky islands of the Antarctic Ocean and more than 2 million breeding pairs exist there.
  6. They are an extremely elegant looking species of penguins with distinctive bright yellow markings in their head and neck.
  7. Their long, slender body helps them glide easily through the ocean.
  8. They have 4 layers of feathers, with the outermost layer being oily and waterproof and the rest three providing insulation.
  9. They have around 70 feathers per square inch and they are vital in keeping the king penguins warm.
  10. They are carnivores feeding on krill, small crustaceans, fish, squid and other marine animals.
  11. Their natural predators are leopard seals, killer whales, sharks and humans.
  12. They breed once a year, on an average, with the mating pairs being faithful to each other.
  13. The female king penguin lays two eggs, of which only one would hatch.
  14. The eggs are incubated and the chicks are looked after by both the parents till the chicks are 1-year-old.
