  1. The mayfly is a medium-sized insect found all across the world.
  2. They inhabit the areas that are close to good-quality water.
  3. There are around 2,500 species of mayfly found in the world.
  4. They are very closely related to dragonflies and damselflies.
  5. They have long, narrow bodies with large wings and a smaller set of hind wings behind them.
  6. The two sets of wings give them better agility and power while in air.
  7. They are extremely sensitive to their surroundings and are animals with one of the shortest lifespans.
  8. Their lifespan varies from half an hour to a few weeks.
  9. They are herbivores, feeding on algae, though some species are known to feed on insects also.
  10. Their natural predators are newts, frogs, toads, birds, small reptiles, rodents and mammals.
  11. They female mayfly lays more than a thousand eggs in water.
  12. The eggs hatch and the mayfly nymphs continue to grow and develop in water for around a year.
  13. After which the nymphs develop into mayflies and fly out of water.
  14. Due to drastic change in environment, mayflies are a species that is threatened from extinction.
