  1. Opossums are medium sized animals found in the North American Forests.
  2. They are believed to have evolved from the basic marsupials of South American Jungles.
  3. They are also known as possum, though they are not related to the Australian possums.
  4. They are the only species of marsupials found outside Australia.
  5. They inhabit the North American grasslands, farmlands and woodlands that are close to water.
  6. In urban areas they are considered as pests as they feed on rubbish and food that is lying around.
  7. They are carriers of rabies and are immune to the venom of snakes like pit-vipers and rattlesnake.
  8. Opossums are omnivores, feeding on snakes, frogs, birds, insects, small mammals and earthworms.
  9. They are also scavengers, feeding on road kills and left over kills of other animals.
  10. Their natural predators are birds of prey, foxes, cats and dogs.
  11. Humans also hunt them for their meat and they also get accidentally run-over by vehicles on the road.
  12. The female opossum gives birth to around 15 babies.
  13. The babies quickly climb into their mother’s pouch and develop there for 2 months.
  14. Due to deforestation and natural habitat loss, opossums are moving to and inhabiting urban and suburban areas.
