  1. Otters are small mammals found all around the world.
  2. They are mammals which can live both in water and on land.
  3. There are around 13 species of otter found worldwide.
  4. They have thick fur coat which keeps them warm in freezing waters.
  5. The thin hair under the fur keeps them warm by trapping the air.
  6. They have four strong webbed feet with 5 toes on each feet enabling them to swim and walk on the banks.
  7. Their toes have strong sharp claws which gives them more strength both on land and in water.
  8. The otter being a fantastic fisher catches most of its food by its sharp front teeth.
  9. Their teeth are specially designed to eat animals with shell like crabs and snails.
  10. Interestingly, some species have purple teeth as they feed on purple sea urchins.
  11. Otters are carnivores mainly feeding on plankton, fish, small amphibians, birds and small mammals.
  12. The sea otter is known to journey from North America to southern Japan.
  13. The sea Otter is also known to grow more than 1m long.
  14. The female otter gives birth in early spring to a few cubs and looks after them for the first few months.
  15. Otters are a threatened species today.
