  1. Pond skaters are water based insects found all through the northern hemisphere.
  2. There are around 500 species of pond skaters found in the world.
  3. They are known by various names like water striders, water skaters, water skippers, water skimmers, Jesus bugs etc.
  4. They inhabit the still-standing water bodies, slow streams, marshes, and pond surfaces.
  5. They are most famous for their ability to walk on water, which they do by using the surface tension of water.
  6. They have sensitive hair on their bodies and legs which help them sense vibrations and ripples in the water.
  7. This helps them catch their prey when any insect accidentally falls in water telling them exactly where to look.
  8. They are quite agile on the water surface and this helps them catch their prey as well as escape from predators.
  9. They are known to hibernate during the winters and come back to the water surface at the start of summer.
  10. They mate during spring and early summer and the female pond skater lays her eggs on a leaf on the edge of water surface.
  11. After hatching, the pond skater nymph falls in water and continues to develop.
  12. They are carnivores, feeding on invertebrates like insects and insect larvae.
  13. Despite their fragile appearance, they are extremely aggressive as predators.
  14. Their natural predators are newts, birds, frogs, toads and fish.
  15. Their biggest threat today is the rising levels of pollution.
