  1. Collared Peccaries are pig-like animals found in South western USA, Central America and South America.
  2. They are known to inhabit the tropical rain forests and also the deserts rich with prickly pears.
  3. Though the look like pig, they belong to a different family of animals and are therefore not related to pigs.
  4. They are also known as Javelina or Musk Hogs.
  5. They differ from pigs in being smaller and in having thinner, longer legs.
  6. Distinctively, they have incredibly strong musk glands located on their rump which helps you smell them before seeing them.
  7. They get their name from the ring of white fur around their neck which appears like a collar.
  8. They are social animals forming bands of 6-12 individuals.
  9. A band comprises a dominant male and the rest of the pecking order is decided by size.
  10. They are active during the mornings and evenings and tend to cool themselves in water, in hot afternoons.
  11. They are omnivores feeding on berries, grass, roots, beans, nuts, insects and small lizards.
  12. Their predators are coyotes, mountain lions and jaguars, bobcats, ocelots and boa constrictors.
  13. Collared Peccaries defend themselves with their sharp upper canines and by forming large herds.
  14. They breed all year long especially during the rains.
  15. The female peccaries give birth to 1-4 young ones after a 145-day gestation
