  1. Skunks are medium sized mammals found mostly in the American continent.
  2. Of the 11 species two species are found in Indonesia and Philippines.
  3. They are best known for the foul smelling odor that they secrete from their rear end when under stress.
  4. All the skunks are striped though their color may vary from black and white, to grey, cream or brown.
  5. On an average they grow between 40 -80cm in height and weigh between 0.5 -6.3 kg.
  6. Their sense of smell and hearing is excellent though they have very poor eyesight.
  7. This is one of the reasons that skunks get run over by cars as they see them very late.
  8. They are solitary animals which come together to breed.
  9. However, in colder areas they are known to live in communal burrows to keep each other warm.
  10. The female skunks give birth to their babies (Kits) in May after a 2-month gestation.
  11. The Kits are born in burrows dug by their mother and stay with their mothers till they start mating themselves.
  12. The kits can’t see and do not have the ability to spray for defense, at 2 weeks they are able to do both.
  13. Skunks are known to hide in burrows, that the dig with their front claws, during the day.
  14. They are omnivores feeding on berries, roots, grass, fungi, insects, small birds and mammals.
  15. Their natural predators are owls, coyotes and wild cats.
