  1. Giant clams are the largest molluscs in the world.
  2. They are found in the Indian Ocean and the South Pacific Ocean.
  3. Once they attach themselves to a particular place, they remain there for the rest of their lives.
  4. They anchor themselves to the coral reefs in the warm tropical waters.
  5. They get most of their nutrition through the sugar and proteins produced by the algae.
  6. They are omnivores and spend a lot of time feeding on algae, small food particles and phytoplankton.
  7. Their predators are eels, snails, fish and starfish, snacking on small parts of the giant clam.
  8. A particular muscle of the Giant clam is considered a delicacy in certain countries.
  9. For which they are excessively harvested by humans leading to a rapid decline in their numbers.
  10. Though Giant clams have both male and female reproductive organs, they cannot self-fertilize.
  11. They release their eggs and sperms in water and the eggs get fertilized by the sperms of another giant clam.
  12. They are known to be able to release 500 million eggs in a clutch.
  13. The larvae hatch out of the fertilized eggs within 12 hours and begin to produce a shell within a few days.
  14. When they are big enough, they find and attach themselves to a reef and remain there for the rest of their lives.
  15. Many of the giant clams have a lifespan of more than a 100 years.
