  1. The humpback whales are a bigger species of whales found in the oceans worldwide.
  2. They are mainly classified into three herds- The Atlantic, The Indian and The Pacific Ocean herds.
  3. They grow to an average length of around 15m.
  4. They inhabit the cold polar waters during the summers and migrate to the warm tropical water during winters.
  5. The humpback whales live off their fat reserves in the winters until they migrate in the summers again.
  6. On an average, they travel around 25,000k to migrate every year.
  7. They are known to migrate in large pods but their relationship between groups doesn’t last long.
  8. The female humpback whales give birth in the winters and feed their young their milk.
  9. They tend to grow very week as they are off food and also feed their young.
  10. The humpback whales have rows of sharp plates and do not have teeth.
  11. They filter feed mainly feeding on plankton, krill, small fish and crab.
  12. They are known to have two blow holes on top of their head enabling them to breathe.
  13. While breathing out, they send out a double stream of spray almost 3-4m in air above the sea surface.
  14. They are also known to be quite acrobatic and launch themselves high above the water surface.
  15. Humpback whales were on the verge of extinction, once, but now have a stable population through conservation.
