  1. Raccoons are medium-sized bear like mammals naturally found in North America.
  2. With deliberate human introduction raccoons are now also found in Europe and Japan.
  3. There are around 10 species of raccoons found across the Americas.
  4. On an average the raccoon grows to be around 70 cm long and weighs up to 10 kg.
  5. Their average lifespan is around 12-16 years.
  6. Initially they inhabited wooded areas and large forests but now they have adapted to mountainous and wetter habitats.
  7. When they are near human communities they are considered to be pests as they enter and raid homes for food.
  8. Raccoons are omnivores feeding on insects, plants, small animals and birds.
  9. Distinctively, they have a black mask around their eyes.
  10. Their front paws are extremely dexterous and sensitive enabling them to open jars and turn doorknobs.
  11. Their most important sense is the sense of touch and their front paws have a spiny coating for protection.
  12. Interestingly, they are known to was their food before eating, possibly because their sense of touch is enhanced by wetness.
  13. Raccoons waddle rather than walk because of the bare under sole of their feet.
  14. They mate between January and march and give birth to around 5 babies after a 2-month gestation
  15. Raccoon kits are born blind and deaf and gain these senses within a month.
