  1. Gentoo Penguins are medium-sized penguins found in the Sub-Atlantic Ocean’s rocky islands.
  2. Distinctively, they have a that looks like a ladies bonnet across the top of their heads.
  3. Amongst penguins, they are most closely related to Chinstrap and Adelie Penguins.
  4. The Gentoo Penguin is the largest species in the world after the King Penguin and the Emperor Penguin.
  5. They grow to an average height of around 80cm, and the penguins found in the north are bigger than the ones found in the south.
  6. Their total breeding population is around 300,000 pairs.
  7. They have adapted well to the harsh climatic conditions.
  8. They are the fastest penguin species in the water often reaching a top swimming speed of around 30mph.
  9. They are known to use their wings to propel them through water.
  10. They are carnivores feeding on krill, small crustaceans, squids and fish.
  11. Their natural predators are killer whales, humans, sharks and leopard seals.
  12. The breeding pairs are known to be faithful to each other and on an average, they breed annually.
  13. Typically, the female Gentoo Penguin lays around two eggs of which only one hatches after 7 months of incubation.
  14. The chicks are looked after by both the parents for the first three months.
  15. Increasing temperatures, pollution and human hunting are the biggest threats to the Gentoo Penguins.
