  1. Glow worms are medium-large sized invertebrates found all around the world.
  2. They are best known for their green and yellow colored light at the end of their tails.
  3. Various insect larva and adult larviform females glowing through bioluminescence are called as Glow worms.
  4. They are known to inhabit the dense woodlands and caves except the Americas.
  5. They are nocturnal animals and their glow can be seen in the night when they are active.
  6. Some glow worm species are beetles, some resemble worms butall are insects.
  7. Interestingly, it is only the female glow worms that glow.
  8. They are known to spend two hours a night, in the mating season, trying to attract the males with their glow.
  9. The males get attracted to the glowing object in foliage and also get attracted to man-made lightings.
  10. Legend has it that the glow worms were used to mark paths and provide light in huts by ancient humans.
  11. It is also believed that the glow worms have some magical powers and are therefore used in certain medicines.
  12. Glow worms are omnivores feeding mainly on insects and small invertebrates.
  13. Their natural predators are spiders, large insects, birds, reptiles and centipedes.
  14. The female glow worm lays between 50 and 100 tiny eggs which hatch between 3 and 6 weeks.
  15. The eggs are laid in a moist place and the eggs hatch faster in warmer climate.
  16. Change in environment, habitat loss, noise and pollution have made glow worms a threatened species today.
