  1. Wasps are medium sized insects that fly.
  2. They are found all around the world except for the polar regions.
  3. There are around 75,000 recognized species of wasps in the world.
  4. Distinctively, they have long antennae and black and yellow markings.
  5. Some species of wasps are very easily confused with bees because of their similar markings.
  6. Wasps are best known for their poisonous sting.
  7. For those people who are allergic to wasp stings, it could be fatal. Otherwise it just swells to a painful lump for a few days.
  8. The wasps that sting, mostly die after stinging as their sting attached to their rear end gets dislodged.
  9. Interestingly, when a wasp dies it releases a smell to other wasps of the danger.
  10. Wasps are social animals with as many as 10000 wasps known to inhabit a single nest.
  11. They have a very short lifespan of 12-22 days.
  12. The queen wasp builds the nest and is the only breeding female.
  13. The eggs laid by the queen bee hatch after a few days and the larvae are looked after by other wasps in the nest.
  14. Wasps are omnivores feeding on nectar, fruits, honey, insects and caterpillars.
  15. They travel nearly half a kilometer from their nest in search of food
  16. Their numerous predators include birds, amphibians, reptiles and various mammals.
