  1. Mountain Gorillas are mainly found in the highlands of Eastern Africa.
  2. There are two species based on their geographic location.
  3. One species is found in the volcanic mountains of Virunga.
  4. The other species is found in the Uganda’s Bwindi Impenetrable forest.
  5. They are very closely related to the human beings and their hands are almost identical to those of humans.
  6. They are one of the largest primates in the world.
  7. The male mountain gorillas are often twice the size of their female counterparts.
  8. Their fur is longer than that of other gorillas and helps them adjust to extreme weather conditions.
  9. They are diurnal animals who spend most of their waking time eating.
  10. They are very sociable, living in groups of 5-30 individuals.
  11. The groups include both male and female gorillas with an alpha male protecting them.
  12. They are non- territorial animals, defending their groups rather than their territories.
  13. They are omnivores, feeding on both plant and animal matter.
  14. Incredibly, they are capable of hauling their huge weight to around 6 m above the ground.
  15. Their average lifespan is between 35-50 years.
  16. Die to habitat loss and illegal poaching, they have become a critically endangered species.
