  1. Earwigs are small sized insects found all around the world.
  2. There are around 2000 species of earwig found in the world.
  3. They inhabit a variety of habitat including the grasslands and woodlands.
  4. Like most insect species, their bodies comprise of three distinct parts.
  5. They have sharp pincers on their abdomen, and their large wings are concealed against their body.
  6. Though they can fly, they don’t.
  7. They are nocturnal insects hiding in the day and active at night.
  8. Interestingly, they get their name as people fear that they would crawl into their ears to lay eggs.
  9. It is not an unfounded fear as earwigs like narrow warm spaces like the ear canal.
  10. They are omnivores feeding on a variety of insects, plants, fruits, flowers and leaves.
  11. Damage to foliage flowers and various crops are often blamed on the earwigs.
  12. Their natural predators include frogs, toads, newts, birds and larger insects.
  13. The female earwig lays up to 80 eggs, which hatch within 2 weeks.
  14. The female earwigs are extremely protective of their young ones.
  15. Earwigs are known to moult around 5 times throughout their lifetime.
  16. On an average, they live to be around1-3 years old.
