  1. Squirrel monkeys are small-sized New World monkeys that are found in Central and South America.
  2. They grow to be only around 25 cm in height, and their tail is almost the same length as their body.
  3. There are 5 species of squirrel monkeys that vary slightly in their appearance and are classified by their geographical location.
  4. They have a very distinctively colored fur and the males grow slightly larger and heavier than the females.
  5. Though their tail is not prehensile, it does help them balance themselves while moving about in the trees.
  6. Their extremely dexterous fingers help them with excellent grip and also help them in holding their food.
  7. They inhabit the middle level canopies in the dense tropical forests with water source nearby.
  8. They are extremely sociable in nature and are found in large troops (of 40-50 members, going up to 500) that move around noisily.
  9. They have a complex social system with a number of subgroups within their troops.
  10. Interestingly, they follow their troops from a distance to get the best advantage of leftover food.
  11. The male squirrel monkeys fight amongst themselves and the winner gets the mating rights to mate with a lot of females.
  12. The female squirrel monkey gives birth to a single infant after a 5-month gestation and looks after the infant all alone.
  13. The infant squirrel monkeys are completely independent by 10 months.
  14. Interestingly, they have the largest brain to body mass ratio and they are extremely intelligent.
  15. They have excellent eyesight and color vision.
  16. They are known to leave a scent trail while moving around on trees by spreading urine on their feet and hands.
