  1. Flying Squirrels are medium-sized rodents found all around the world.
  2. They are closely related to the common squirrel and are slightly larger than them.
  3. They get their name from their distinct ability to be airborne for a remarkable duration.
  4. Despite this they cannot actually fly, instead they move through air by gliding between the trees.
  5. Enabling them to fly is a wing-like structure that stretches and is between their front and back legs. This structure also acts as a parachute.
  6. Interestingly, the longest glide that is recorded is nearly 90m!.
  7. There are around 50 species of flying squirrel in the world.
  8. They vary in color and size according to the species.
  9. The largest of the species is the Woolly flying squirrel and the smallest of the species is then pygmy flying squirrel.
  10. They are known to inhabit the woodlands and grasslands across the world.
  11. They are nocturnal animals and try to find food in the night cover.
  12. They are omnivores and feed on all kinds of foods – nuts, eggs of birds, insects and the like.
  13. They have a lot of natural predators. Including domestic cats, snakes, foxes, raccoons, birds of prey, coyotes and dogs.
  14. They breed twice – during summer and early spring.
  15. The female flying squirrel gives birth to 2-7 baby flying squirrels after a 40-day gestation.
  16. The baby flying squirrels are born without fur and are blind.
  17. They open their eyes and get their fur within a month and start gliding by 2 months.
