  1. Puffins are small seabirds found in the cold Northern Atlantic regions.
  2. They are closely related to guillemots and other auks.
  3. There are 4 species- the Atlantic Puffin, the Tufted Puffin, the Horned Puffin and the Rhinoceros Auklet.
  4. Distinctively, they have triangular beaks that are brightly colored and are broad and flattened.
  5. The bill is brighter in the mating season and grows dull in colder months, before shedding.
  6. They have black and white, thick plumage to help them withstand the cold climate of the North Atlantic.
  7. Depending on the species they inhabit the Pacific, Atlantic and parts of the Arctic circle.
  8. They are very sociable and are found in huge colonies on grassy clifftops.
  9. Interestingly, they also stick together to form “rafts” to protect themselves when they are out feeding.
  10. Though they look somewhat like penguins, they are excellent fliers and are also great at swimming.
  11. They are known to dive around 60m underwater and are capable of staying underwater for almost 2minutes at a time!
  12. They breed from April to August and dig big burrows to safeguard their eggs.
  13. The female puffin lays a single egg that is incubated by both the parents till it hatches after 6 weeks.
  14. The puffin chick is fed and cared for by its parents till it fledges after 2 months.
  15. They are omnivores but primarily feed on sand eels, herrings, sprat, capelins, squid, molluscs and crustaceans.
  16. Interestingly, their uniquely shaped bill can continue to store and collect up to around 30 fish before feeding on them.
  17. Their natural predators are Gulls, skuas and foxes.
  18. Their biggest threats are increasing pollution and human hunting.
