  1. Macaws are colorful parrots having their origin in Central and Southern America.
  2. There are around 17 species of Macaw found in the world.
  3. They are one of the largest species of parrots in the world.
  4. Many of them grow to be more than a meter in height.
  5. They are most popular for their bright-colored feathers which can be green, blue yellow and red in color.
  6. They inhabit the tropical rainforests of South America.
  7. They are omnivores, feeding on fruits, nuts, eggs, insects and small mammals and reptiles.
  8. They are diurnal birds known to fly long distances in search of food.
  9. Their specially formed toes help them get a better grip of their prey as well as the tree branches.
  10. Their powerful, large beaks give them better access to nuts as they can easily break open their shell.
  11. They are quite sociable and can be often seen in groups of around 30 individuals.
  12. They are also exceptionally intelligent birds, often known to mimic humans.
  13. They communicate between themselves through loud calls like squawking.
  14. They are one of the few animals which have the same breeding partner throughout their lives.
  15. They groom and share their food with their partners, with the male partner gathering food while the female incubates eggs.

  17. They are quite popular as pets and due to the black market dealings, they are adversely affected.
  18. Many of the Macaw species are endangered today, due to the rapid deforestation and consequent habitat loss.
