  1. Cichlids are brightly colored freshwater fish found all around the world.
  2. There are more than 1,300 species of cichlids in the world.
  3. Interestingly, all the species of cichlids are found in Africa in specific places.
  4. The cichlids are native to the Victoria, Malawi, and Edwards lake in Eastern Africa.
  5. They also are native to the largest lake in Central Africa- The Tanganyika Lake.
  6. The evolution and diversity of cichlids in these lakes is significant to the scientists studying it.
  7. The few species of cichlids found in South America are believed to have evolved from the African cichlids.
  8. Surprisingly, they are thought to have evolved after crossing the Atlantic Ocean year ago.
  9. All the species look similar in appearance but differ in color and size.
  10. They may range from 2cm to over1m in length.
  11. Cichlids are easy to keep in aquariums as they are small and colorful.
  12. Some of them are bred for meat because of their enormous size.
  13. Many of the species are considered to be endangered because of high levels of water pollution and hunting.
  14. Depending on the species, they may feed on algae, small invertebrates, insects or fish.
  15. They have their numerous predators in humans, other fish and birds.
  16. Strangely, bigger species of cichlids prey on the smaller species and prove to be their biggest predators.
  17. All Cichlid species show strong parental bonds.
  18. The female cichlids often fan water over her eggs whereas the males are known to defend their territory.
  19. Baby cichlids are called fry and are looked after by both the parents till they are a few weeks old.
